A small piece of parchment of rather good quality lies on the anvil of the blacksmith Mephrit, weighted down by a small pair of iron pliers. It is filled with narrow script, written by a hand used to quill and ink, flowing, high uppercase letters contrasted by stocky lowercase. It reads:
Dear Blacksmith,
I beg your forgiveness for my transgression. In dire need, I took from you: Three hammers of iron and a rod of the same.
I pledge to you: I shall return them as soon as it is possible for me.
I am lodged in this very tavern, although circumstances force my absence for two nights' time.
Until I return your belongings to you, best of wishes.
We did not yet had the pleasure of a proper greeting, but you shall know me by the name of Ancanagar.
